Description
Egg tempera is the oldest method of preparing paint. Egg yolk contains albumin, a sticky protein that hardens when exposed to air, a non-drying oil, and lecithin, a fatty substance that helps liquids combine into a stable mixture. Egg mixed with pigments and distilled water is an ideal emulsion for painting. Ancient artists in Babylon, Mycenaean Greece, and China already used it. Egg tempera paintings have decorated Egyptian tombs, Christian catacombs, and Byzantine churches for centuries.
