Artists’ Oil Mediums: make the most of your paint.

By its very nature, oil colour is incompatible with water and dissolves only in turpentine, white spirit or low-odour thinners. Artists’ oil colours are made by dispersing pigments in an oil medium to create a smooth, slow-drying paint. The choice of oil mediums from the wide variety available depends on the surface and the finish required, and the working properties preferred during painting. Oils diluents, mediums, varnishes complement perfectly the Georgian and other Daler-Rowney oil colours.

Oil diluents.

Turpentine and low-odour thinner which dilute oil colour to create thin, quick-drying washes in the early stages of painting and can also be used to clean brushes. Directions: Mix with oil paints until desired consistency. Also used directly to clean brushes and palettes.

Oil mediums.

From purified linseed oil which reduces the consistency of oil colour and slows down drying time to painting medium which is an all-purpose painting medium that dries to a tough elastic film. Directions: Mix with oil paints until desired consistency.

Oil varnishes.

Retouching, damar, matt and artists’ clear Picture varnishes which are ideal to protect paintings, to enhance the colour which are removable or non removable. Directions: A thin layer to be applied after oil painting is dry.
